Framing paintings
I truly believe that a good frame makes a huge difference to how the finished painting looks on your walls. I have researched (and tested) quite a few different framing options and now choose to have all my paintings framed by a professional framer*. A good framer not only provides a high quality bespoke frame but can also provide advice and a checkpoint to make sure you choose the right frame and colours to best suit the painting.
Colour is so important and so I choose frames that are hand painted in Farrow & Ball colours that best suit the painting. I have a collection of colour swatches to help me decide on the right colour and once I have made my choice, I double check this with my framer (who has a great eye for colour). I typically choose a white slip with a darker shade for the frame.
Below I have shown a few mouldings I regularly use. I will aim to keep this page updated but I am always interested in new styles and so may have other suggestions for your chosen painting.
Option 1: Curved frame moulding with a simple white slip
Option 2: Squarer moulding with simple white slip
Option 3: Simple scoop frame moulding with a white slip
For smaller studies, I sometimes choose a frame without a slip:
Option 4: Frame with metallic detailing and no slip
If you are looking to frame a painting you have chosen or have any questions, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks
Catherine
