Capturing metal surfaces in Oil | Friday 25th September 2026
Capturing metal surfaces in paint
Friday 25th September 2026
10am - 1pm
My passion is still life oil painting and I love including a variety surfaces in my work. A reflective surface can provide a good contrast to a softer subject leading to a more interesting final painting. In this workshop we will explore how you capture a reflective surface in paint by studying a silver object contrasted against some fruit.
Approach
I will start with a short demonstration introducing the subject and how I would approach it. Mid way through I will provide another short demonstration to discuss building up and finishing a painting. Demonstrations will be kept short to ensure that you have plenty of time to work on your own painting.
You will have the option to work from life or from a high quality reference photo. I will often set up a few scenes for those who prefer to work from life but you are also welcome to build your own composition using the objects provided.
Note: The painting included in the photos is an example image and may be different to the one we work from during the workshop.
The sessions are small with a maximum of 6 people so there is plenty of opportunity for individual support, questions and discussion throughout the day.
During the workshop we will cover:
Initial drawing & key considerations for the subject
Getting started with paint and building up colour
Colour mixing of lights and darks in relation to the subject
The role of neutral colours in a painting
Adding detail and finishing touches
Some experience painting in oil or acrylic is preferable but if you are beginner and are interested in joining, please email me and we can discuss catherinemcveanart@gmail.com
Practicalities
The workshop will be held at my home studio (Ascot SL5)
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided during the workshop
Please bring an apron to work in and I would recommend not wearing your best clothes!
Materials
Materials will be provided for use during the session. This will include:
Wooden board for your painting, primed for use with oil
Oil paint
Solvent
Brushes
Tear off palette
Cloths / paper towels
Table easel
You will need to bring your own apron / protective clothing.
You are welcome to bring your own materials (the cost of the workshop will be £45 if you are providing your own materials). In this case, please get in touch for a recommended materials list as there will be specific colours suggested for this subject.
For any questions, please email me catherinemcveanart@gmail.com
